Niu

Five million electric two-wheelers in, they pointed all of it at dirt.

Beijing · electric since 2014
The story

Why this sign hangs here.

Niu started in 2014 building smart electric scooters for people crossing crowded cities, and it worked — the company has put something north of five million machines on the road across more than fifty countries. What separated Niu from the enormous field of electric scooter companies was never the motor. It was the software: a connected app as standard equipment years before that was normal, removable batteries you carry up to your apartment, and build quality that made the whole thing feel like a finished product instead of a kit.

The XQi3 is what happens when a company with that much battery and firmware experience decides to build a dirt bike. It is not a scooter with knobbies and it is not an e-bike with the pedals removed — forged aluminum frame, adjustable KKE suspension at both ends, hydraulic discs, and a 2.3 kWh pack that lifts out from under the seat. Coming behind it are the XQi 400 and 500, which push the platform into genuine small-displacement motorcycle territory.

XQi 400 / 500 — Coming

The platform grown up. The 500 makes about 39 hp with ABS and traction control — 125-equivalent territory, still silent.

Full disclosure

Silent changes who gets to ride.

We took the Niu line because electric removes the three things that keep people off dirt bikes: the noise that makes neighbours and trailheads a problem, the clutch that eats a first-timer's whole afternoon, and the service list that turns a hobby into a second job. The XQi3 is not a compromise version of a dirt bike — it is a dirt bike you can ride at seven in the morning.

Things to know

Questions we actually get.

Is an electric dirt bike a real dirt bike?
The XQi3 makes about 8 kW peak with all of its torque available instantly, weighs around 160 pounds, and rides on adjustable suspension with hydraulic discs. It is a real motorcycle. What it is not is a 250 four-stroke — different range, different sound, different service list.
How far will it actually go?
Niu claims 50–55 miles. Ride actual terrain in Sport mode and you will land well under that. The honest answer for a full day out is a second battery, which is the whole point of a pack that lifts out.
What does it cost to run?
Pennies of electricity, and the service list is brakes, tires, chain and bearings. No oil, no filters, no valves, no jetting.
Street legal or not?
Both, depending on trim. XQi3 Street ships with a VIN, mirrors, signals and DOT tires. XQi3 Wild is off-road only and uncapped. Buy the one that matches where you actually ride — we will talk you through it.
Who is it wrong for?
Anyone who wants to ride all day between charges, anyone who needs freeway speed, and anyone who loves the noise. Those are real reasons to buy something else and we will say so.
The tribe

Who rides the sign.

Electric changes who gets to ride and when. No noise means early mornings and close neighbors stop being a problem, no clutch means a first-timer is riding in ten minutes instead of stalling for an afternoon, and a pack that charges off a wall outlet means you do not need a shop to own one. Utah has more legal dirt within an hour of Centerville than most states have in total — the XQi3 is the machine that lets a whole family go use it on a Tuesday evening.

Two XQi3s are in the building. The only way to understand an electric dirt bike is to twist the throttle and hear nothing happen while you accelerate. Text the shop and we will have one out of the crate.

Text the shop. Come by. Bring the RM250 story. Worst case, you stand around a motorcycle for an hour and drive home slightly more alive than you left.
