Alpinestars started in 1963 in Asolo, a small town in northern Italy, when leather craftsman Sante Mazzarolo began making boots. Motocross was just catching on in Europe, and his boot quickly became the one racers measured everything else against.
The name comes from the edelweiss — stella alpina in Italian — the flower that grows in the mountains above Asolo. Road racing gear followed in the 1970s. Sante’s son Gabriele opened Alpinestars USA in Los Angeles in 1986 and has led the company since 1993. Today it outfits riders from motocross to MotoGP, right down to airbag protection.
